CLUB INFO

“A PEARL IS A PEARL ...
ALWAYS PRECIOUS AND SHINES WITH A LUSTER UNEQUALED”

Our humble beginning...
The Lions Club of George Town Mutiara was sponsored by the Lions Club of Georgetown Central and received her 'Instruments of Charter' from Lions Club International on 13th April 1988 with Lion Danny Lim as her Charter President.
The Club was the first Lions Club in the District (Malaysia) to comprise Members from both genders.
Our name - Lions Club of George Town Mutiara... Penang is known as the “Pearl of the Orient”. Being a club formed on the island, the name “Pearl” is most suitable and we named ourselves in the national language “MUTIARA”.  The beautiful and desirable “Mutiara”. "Mutiara" is not only lustrous and beautiful on the outside, it also serves as an effective traditional medicine for internal healing when crushed and swallowed.
As Past International Director Dato’ Douglas KK Lee said, “Not only are you beautiful and desirable outside, you are also life saving, when applied inside”.

Formation and Charter Ceremony Night...
Eleven former Leos and nine service-minded friends of Leos were inducted by then-District Governor Ong Tat Lien on 20th April 1988.
The function was held at Corner Club, Gurney Drive, Penang. The ceremony was witnessed by fifty members of the Lions family.
A formal Charter Presentation Ceremony cum installation of the Charter President Danny Lim and Board of Directors was held at Ferringhi Beach Hotel on 25th June 1988.

Our Logo...
Our logo represents a frame of the rising sun that encloses the moon. The rising sun and moon symbolize the strength and unity of club members in carrying out the objects of Lionism, regardless of time.
The “Pinang” tree which stands on the island symbolizes the island of Penang which we love, care and honour proudly.
"Mutiara" means a pearl that will never lose its lustre, thus depicting our everlasting sincerity in supporting and helping the nation and mankind.

Since then...
The Club has grown from strength to strength. The Club has produced two District Governors in Past Council Chairperson Allan Cheah Cheng Wah (District Governor, District 308 B for FY 1997-1998) who was then elected as Council Chairperson for Multiple District 308 (FY 2004-2005) and Past District Governor Dato' Khoo Kay Huat (District Governor, District 308B2 for FY 2006-2007).

For FY 2009-2010, the Club was awarded the Excellence Club Award by Lions Clubs International (one of only six clubs in the District) and the Club's monthly bulletin won an "Honorable Mention" in the worldwide Club bulletin contest by Lions Clubs International.

Numerous members of the club have been recognized and appointed to serve in the District Cabinet in various portfolios. The Club is currently one of the leading Lions Clubs in District 308 B2, Malaysia.
